Now that you have just finished what you think is a great looking website and what is left to do now is send it to the internet. After you are done you believe that is that. Or is it? See, your website may look good from your computer but did you bother to find out how it looks on other peoples computers? If not, you could be displaying to hundreds or even thousands of people a messed up website design that hurts your credibility.
All computer screen are not made the same. That means when your site loads up it could be all messed up. Things like having one section display at the top while the other displays near the bottom. Navigation controls are off center or not showing up at all. This can most likely happen if you have a three or more tier website. So what if your site looks good on your pc. You are going to need to get out and test your site with other pcs quickly before you broadcast your site to the entire web.
I found that the ideal place is the neighborhood library. Their computers are set so that seniors can read the screen easier. Dynamic resolutions that normally makes your website wider than you are use to. Don’t be shocked if your site does not fit the screen correctly like it did on your personal computer. It is normal to see a cursor at the bottom come up to span across your site. What you are hoping for is that all of your columns come up where they should be. If not then just make a few margin adjustments until it lines up right. You will never get it to fit the screen the same on all computers. You just want it to look good enough so that viewers can search your site properly.
Big pictures can also through your site off. If they take up to much space then it will push other tiers out of position. Even if it did not happen on your pc it still can happen on others. Be careful to ensure that any images you display are well within your parameters.
Setting your container margins on your default or style page within 1000 pixels usually gives you the best results. Within that margin just play around with the separate margins for each column of your website until all show up the way it is suppose to be.
So be sure you understand that you are not done once you load up your website. Test the look of the website with different computers to see what a potential visitor will see. If not then who knows how many people you may have turned away from your site.
